18. The fish shop
This simple village shop belonged to Pasqualino Pigazzini, the last itinerant fishmonger of Bissone, whose family supplied the municipalities of Basso Ceresio and Mendrisiotto for three generations.
Here, fresh fish caught the day before with nets or tirlindana fishing rods was sold.

The history
Born in 1927, Pasqualino, known to everyone as Lino, spent his whole life among fish, continuing a family tradition. As a child, he accompanied his granny Maria, known as La Mariin di péss, when she went up to Arogno and Rovio with her basked full with fish. After his grandmother Maria, the business was taken over by his father Agostino, who took the fish to nearby villages on his Zehnder motorbike. When Agostino was called up for military service, Pasqualino replaced him, going on his bicycle even as far as Mendrisio. And it was not just about the fish: there were nets to repair, boats to fix and bait to procure. And then it was his turn. He expanded his range of action and opened a second shop in Mendrisio. In the 1960s and 1970s when the fish trade was thriving, he supplied weekly the warehouses in Lugano. Pasqualino Pigazzini was the last itinerant fishmonger of Bissone. He passed away in 2003. After him, La "bottega del pesce" remained closed forever.
