9. Bollina House

The house that closes off the centre to the south belonged to the Bollinas, a family of stucco artists from Riva San Vitale.

The history

The history

The Bollina family was related to the Carati family of Bissone, who may have previously owned the building.

Francesco Carati was a talented architect from the 17th century who left many traces of his work in today's Czech Republic.

The house preserves a large 15th-century fresco on the lake-facing façade depicting a crowned snake swallowing a Saracen.

The coat of arms, belonging first to the Visconti and later to the Sforza, Dukes of Milan, must be connected to the proximity of a castle belonging to the Sforza family in the latter half of the 15th century.

The castle, of which only a few traces remain, was destroyed by the Swiss at the beginning of the 16th century, together with other castles in the region (Lugano, Morcòte).
