5. Tencalla Hause
Bissone used to be guarded by a castle that stood on the site currently occupied by Casa Tencalla and the adjoining town hall.
The history
The history
Unfortunately, like the castle of Morcote, at the beginning of the 16h century the castle suffered the same ruinous end, falling under the pickaxes of the Swiss. Little remains: a column on the ground floor of the town hall, next to which is an arched doorway leading to a portico with visible medieval walls and two open arcades facing the lake in the direction of the castle's presumed pier.
The first records of the castle date back to the 12th century. Towards the end of the 14th century, the property passed to Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Count of Pavia and Virtù, and after various successions, it ended up in the hands of the Duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza.
The castle, a massive four-sided construction, probably had four towers at its corners, with a scarp base. At the northeast corner, towards the lake, there is a massive modern building (Casa Porretti), to which two of the four pillars that supported the entrance gate to the castle are attached. The complex has been significantly altered over the centuries, making it difficult to discern its original layout.
