The history
The history
Before then, the supply of water for domestic needs was possible thanks to wells or public fountains. Water from the lake was used for other purposes, such as washing clothes, watering animals and cleaning tools. Many houses owned their own well, usually in the courtyard, or inside a room. The water flowed from underground spring or was collected the roof into the well.
Each well was equipped with a pulley to easily lower and raise the bucket. In summer, the well would also serve as a fridge, especially for meat, fish, eggs, milk and cheese. It could happen that, due to clumsy handling, the basket containing the food would tip over and the contents end up in the water. In this case, ropes with various hooks were used to retrieve the food scattered on the bottom or floating on the surface. This well belonged to the Orsatti family.
