11. Casa Bollina

The house that seals off the hamlet to the south belonged to the Bollinas, a family of stucco-working craftsmen from Riva San Vitale.

History

The Bollina family were related to Bissone’s Carati family, who were possibly the former owners of the building. Francesco Carati was an accomplished architect from the Seicento (17th century) who left much evidence of his work in what is currently the Czech Republic. The house retains on the side facing the lake a large fresco dating back to the Quattrocento (15th century) and depicting a snake swallowing an unruly man. The coat of arms, belonging first to the Visconti and later to the Sforza Houses, Dukes of Milan, must be connected to the proximity of a castle belonging to the Sforza family in the latter half of the Quattrocento (15th century). The castle, of which little evidence remains, was destroyed by the Swiss at the start of the Cinquecento (16th century), alongside other castles in the region (Lugano, Morcote).
