The fishmonger’s shop

This low-key village shop belonged to Pasquale Pigazzini, a fishmonger from Bissone.

History

Here fresh fish was sold, fished the day before either with nets or a pasternoster rig (‘tirlindana’). Born in 1927, Pasqualino, known to everyone as Lino, spent his whole life among fish, carrying on a family tradition. As a child, he would go with his granny Maria, known as “La Mariin di péss”, when she went up to Arogno and Rovio with her wicker basked laden with fish. After granny Maria, the business was carried on by his father Agostino, who would take the fish to nearby villages on his Zehnder motorbike. When Agostino was called away on his military service, Pasquale would replace him, going even as far as Mendrisio on his bicycle. And it was not just about the fish, nets would need mending, the boat sorting out, baits obtaining. And then it was his turn. He spread his range of action and opened a second shop in Mendrisio. In the 1960s and 70s when the business was thriving, he would supply weekly the stores in Lugano. Pasquale Pigazzini was the last itinerant fishmonger of Bissone. He passed away in 2003. After him, La bottega del pesce would remain shut forever.
