The kindergarten and elementary school

History

These two buildings were erected in 1970 (the kindergarten) and 1980 (the elementary school) respectively on designs by the well-known architect Dolf Schnebli (Baden 1928- Zurich 2009). Proof of his ingenious output abounds in Switzerland and in our canton, largely in public buildings. Having graduated from Zurich Polytechnic, Schnebli travelled extensively abroad, spending time in Paris, Zurich, Mulhouse, Venice, New York, Boston and St. Louis, where he came into contact with world-famous architects. In 1958 he set up his architectural practice in Agno. His first large-scale building in Ticino was the Liceo in Locarno, which was to become a masterpiece in Swiss school building construction. More school, university and private buildings followed. Schnebli held lecturing posts with various American universities such as St. Louis, Boston and Berkeley and, from 1969 onwards, at Zurich Polytechnic.

Architecture and urban planning in Switzerland have been considerably influenced by the work of Schnebli, an architect seen as a leading exponent of the new Ticinese architecture.
